Home Maintenance for May
8 Easy Outdoor Tasks Before Summer

In Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, May is that “finally!” month—pollen’s still hanging around, the yard is taking off, and we all know the hot, humid stretch is right around the corner. Knock out a few outdoor items now and you’ll save yourself headaches (and repair bills) – plus, after completing your May home maintenance, you’ll actually get to enjoy your deck and backyard this summer.
1) Inspect and Clean Outdoor Furniture

- Hose off pollen, dirt, and that green film that shows up after a few damp spring days.
- Tighten loose screws/bolts and swap any missing hardware (it’s usually a 5-minute fix).
- Check cushions for mildew and let them dry fully before you stash them in a bin.
2) Seal Decks and Patios

- Start with a good cleaning (Tool Rentals are your friends)—sealants don’t stick well to pollen and grime.
- Do a quick safety check: soft/rotted boards, popped fasteners, and wobbly railings are common after our freeze/thaw swings.
- Seal or re-stain before the humid stretch and summer storms roll in (your deck will thank you).
3) Check Fences and Gates for Repairs

- Walk the fence line and push on posts — loose posts and soft wood are pretty common after wet spring weather.
- Fix sagging gates (a small adjustment now beats wrestling it all summer).
- Touch up stain/paint anywhere bare wood is showing so it doesn’t soak up moisture.
4) Service Air Conditioning Units

- Swap the HVAC filter (especially helpful during pollen season). What does the filter label say? Some are good for 30-days, others for 6-months!
- Clear bushes/leaves/grass/mud and other stuff like the cottonwood fluff that’ll get pulled into the fins of the outdoor unit—give it at least a couple feet of breathing room.
- If it’s been a while, schedule a tune-up now before the first 90° week hits Cincinnati.
- Pro-Tip – get a regular service every 6 months.
5) Inspect Sprinkler Systems

- Run each zone and watch for broken heads, geysers, overspray, and dry patches.
- Aim heads away from siding and your foundation—keeping water where it belongs can help prevent basement moisture issues.
- Update the timer as rain patterns change (May can swing from soggy to dry fast around here).
6) Clean and Repair Window Screens

- Pop screens out and wash gently with mild soap and water (you’ll be surprised how much pollen comes off).
- Patch small holes or re-screen torn panels—mosquito season is coming.
- Before you open windows for “free AC,” make sure screens fit snugly and latches hold.
7) Mulch Garden Beds

- Fresh mulch helps hold moisture when Cincinnati heat ramps up and it cuts down on weeds.
- Keep mulch a few inches away from siding, deck posts, and the base of trees (you don’t want moisture trapped against wood).
- Edge beds for a clean look and easier mowing.
